I firmly believe that it is the obligation of every citizen in any democratic country in the world to cast their votes. Be it general elections or the local municipal elections. Yes I know what a lot of you are thinking, it's just a drop in the ocean - it doesn't matter. It does - it takes a drop to start making puddle and a puddle becomes something bigger until you have an ocean and that can bring change.
By selecting to withhold your vote - for whatever reason - you fail yourself, your country and your children and your future. You don't add your voice to the call of change if that is needed. You don't add your vote to support the positive changes already taking place.
That apathetic municipal worker you keep complaining about. The one that is wasting your tax money to do nothing all day, while you have to stand in this endless queue and wait for the pathetic service you just know you going to get - well if you didn't vote then sorry - suck it up my friend. You have no right to complain. Don't send letters to the newspaper and write to your Local Councillor - YOU failed to get out the starting block - how can you expect them to change it now.
Yes non-voting is an absolute pet hate of mine. The excuses - no time, can't stand in the queues, the elections officials are incompetent, why bother they will just dump the ballot boxes somewhere... people have all the excuses.
Voting this year took me all of 10 minutes. I spent my morning out in the countryside taking photos. Came back, picked up my ID book, headed for my polling station, stood in a short queue, got myself inked, cast my votes and was back home before my tea was cold. Yes in more populous areas you may have to queue slightly longer. So what? How many of you stand in queues overnight waiting for the release of the latest iPhone or to get tickets to that MUST SEE concert? Too many of you view election day as just another public holiday - an excuse for a free day off work.
It comes around only once every 5 years. It is not the time to be apathetic. This is your future. The future of your children. The future of your country. Surely you want it to count?
Why is it such an issue for me now?
Anybody see what is happening in Parliament lately? It's a joke. And the best part of the joke is all the non-voters who stand around and say "You see - I told you. Bunch of useless idiots running this country. Bringing shame on us in the international community.". Well hello - did you go vote? Your vote could've meant one less seats for one of those useless bunches and one more seat for a voice of reason.
YOUR vote could have made a difference.
Think about that. Ponder it. And ask yourself what you are going to do in 2019. In the meantime enjoy the entertainment that is Parliament and hope that there are some voices of reason in there to keep order until 2019!
