Your mistakes might as well be your own,

If I impart only one bit of wisdom to my children it would be to trust their instincts.
Human nature dictates that they will want to do things their way. The kids of each generation always think they know best. We as their parents know differently because we had the same lectures from our parents and yet we were still determined to do it our own way and make our own mistakes. As we have aged so we have grown wiser (we hope) and are now able to acknowledge that perhaps our folks were correct after all and we in turn try to pass that lesson on to our own children.
Save yourself time and trouble. They are going to make those same mistakes in life that you did no matter how hard you try and direct them otherwise. The best and hardest lessons are always those learnt as a result your own mistakes. Let them bang their heads. It won't do them any harm for the most part.
I believe what the kids really need is the knowledge that they can trust their instincts in almost any situation they will find themselves in. We as parents or mentors can guide them to learn this vital skill. We know what kind of world awaits them and sadly a lot of us are at fault for not preparing them adequately. Today's generation of young adults have some tough years ahead of them as they try to find their way in this world, learning to be independent, which will include balancing their cheque book, paying taxes, getting proper medical care and knowing which is the correct bus to catch home. Sadly a lot of these skills are lacking as a result of helicopter parenting, stranger danger training, mom usually taking them wherever they need to go and social media on a scale never experienced before.
They are over-stimulated with 1000s of images all day every day telling them how they should look and feel, what they should eat, who they should socialise with and where they need to be seen. In a world full of choice it can become too much to know what is the correct choice, especially when you are up against FOMO (Fear.Of.Missing.Out) and YOLO (You.Only.Live.Once) catch phrases measuring your success against others.
There is only one way to face up to all of these challenges and that is knowing to trust your instincts. If you are able to tap into that skill you may save yourself a lot of heartache down the road. I know the times I have turned against what my gut was telling me I have paid the price somewhere down the line. By no means does trusting your instincts mean you will never make a mistake. "To err is human" and err we all must. But at least we can learn from those mistakes and we can perhaps minimise the bad ones by listening to what our inner voice is telling us and also learning to recognise the inner voice the next time.
The first person you need to trust in this life is yourself. As with everything if you do not have trust in yourself then you cannot have trust in others.
Let self trust be your starting point and guide. You will find your instincts are rarely, if ever, wrong.
Love Always
