Having watched the new Jungle Book today nurturing makes me think of ol' Baloo and the Bare Necessities. That is really what nurturing is all about - getting back to basics. And that is the basics that work for YOU and your soul so that you are being true to your authenticity.
I'm not talking here about the basics to survive - food, a home, some kind of income (which many millions go without on a daily basis!). Dig a little deeper and think about those 'extras' which make your heart sing with joy. Those things which uplift you and add something back to your life.
I'll use the analogy I was given in therapy (good for boundary setting this one!).
Think of yourself as a jug and glasses around you to be filled (family, work, friends, kids, hobbies, church, kids sports.... the list is pretty endless). First of all to truly nurture yourself you have to put a lid on some of those glasses. Sorry some things simply do have to go for your own sanity and well being. I know this is hard - been there done that - do it anyway and thank yourself later.
So you've now halved them... some have to be replenished on an ongoing basis and others need attention every so often. Work out which is which please. Okay now you have 2 groups- both of which need filling or topping up which never seems to end. Here's the kicker...
What is replenishing you while you busy topping up all around you?
Didn't think of that did you... If you are constantly topping up everyone else and neglecting yourself eventually you WILL run dry. Then not only are you useless to others but you are also pretty useless to yourself. While you will always worry about your kids health, or a job which needs to get done or bill which needs to be paid, if you do not STOP and breathe you will just STOP completely.
So the golden rule is that every time you lean over to fill up a glass you have to straighten back up and allow yourself to be refilled before continuing with another round.
This is where your list of bare necessities will come in handy. Yes I'm telling you to again get pen and paper and get writing. Make a note somewhere, preferably in your day diary so you can flip back to the list often, of what are your bare necessities so when you need topping up you know exactly where to head.
What are my bare necessities?
Ten things which will replenish and nurture my soul. I know when I am engaging in one of those activities or with those special people I am focused on the present, I am focused on myself, I am looking after myself. It makes me a better mother, partner, friend, employee and human being.
We were not born to just pay bills and die. So nurture yourself and do it well. You deserve it!
Love Always
